Welcome to the R & D department at Anatomical Travelogue. We plan to use this space to release short case studies and software tools on topics of interest to the medical imaging, 3D graphics, and video production communities. Our team has two main roles:
Processing medical datasets
Our visualizations begin as medical scans of real structures. We work with many medical image sources, including confocal microscopy, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), computed tomography (CT), cryosection, and fluoroscopy. Imaging technology is imperfect, so the data is typically processed to remove image artifacts, isolate and classify structures, and reduce noise (among other steps) in order to best represent the subject matter. We consult directly with medical professionals and imaging technicians to obtain scans that are both quantitatively accurate and visually compelling.
Developing tools and techniques
Our second role is to support our colleagues who produce content, from the initial medical data to the final visualization as still imagery, video or interactive web components. In this capacity, we develop custom plugins and scripts to improve quality and productivity at all points in this process. Many of these tools are useful in non-medical media production and may find their way onto this site.
